Rebellious psychiatrist Maya visits her parents' isolated mountain village for the first time since birth, to sell the family house, only to enter a patriarchal microcosm complete with superstitions, fears and fables of goblins in the woods. She is soon led to big discoveries about the myths, her parents, but also about herself.

MFI Script2Film

Maya has been selected to participate in Torino Film Lab’s Next Online Development workshops 2020. The project was presented by Maya writer/director Tonia Mishiali and co-writer Andreas Kyriacou. Torino Film Lab is a year-round, international laboratory one of the most prestigious in the world, that supports talents from all over the world, through training, development, production & distribution funding activities.

TFL Next

Maya writer/director Tonia Mishiali and co-writers Andreas Kyriacou and Frixos Masouras, have been selected to participate in Mediterranean Film Institute’s Script2Film Workshops 2020, a program in Greece dedicated to film script development, supported by Creative Europe.

A previous version of the script, under a different working title, was developed in 2018 through Sources2 Scriptwriting Workshop based in Germany and supported by Creative Europe, with writer/director Tonia Mishiali attending.

Sofia Meetings

Maya has been selected to participate in European Genre Forum program 2023. The project was presented by Maya writer/director Tonia Mishiali and co-writers Andreas Kyriacou and Frixos Masouras. The program consisted of 3 labs:

Screenwriting & Directing Lab @ Fantastic Zagreb Film Festival, 6-9 July 2023, Zagreb
Producing Lab @ Imagine Fantastic Film Festival, 31 October – 3 November, 2023, Amsterdam
Marketing and Packaging Lab @ Black Nights Film Festival, 14-18 November, 2023, Tallinn

The final pitch was done in Tallin Industry and Baltic Event.

European Genre Forum

Maya writer/director Tonia Mishiali was selected to participate in Sofia Meetings co-production market 2021 that took place online due to the Pandemic. Sofia Meetings is part of Sofia International Film Festival. Maya won a post-production award by Focus Fox Hungary after the pitch.

Maya writer/director Tonia Mishiali was selected to participate in Meetings on the bridge co-production market 2021 that took place online due to the Pandemic. Meetings on the bridge is part of Istanbul Film Festival.

Special Mention

A previous version of the script, with working title Moonstruck, was awarded a Special Mention at the Scriptwriters Guild of Greece 2018 Script Competition. Moonstruck was written by Tonia Mishiali.

 

Post-production Award

Maya won a post-production award by Focus Fox Hungary at Sofia Meetings 2021.
